Private Osborne: Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers: Burnside Expedition, Roanoke Island, Second Front Against Richmond
Published in Paperback by Pelican Pub Co (April, 2002)
Average review score:

A powerful look at the horror of the Civil WarPrivate Osborne is a powerful look at the horror of the Civil War through the eyes of a young man who was only sixteen when he joined as a member of the Massachusetts 23rd Volunteers. His letters are presented in this thoughtful account, which provides plenty of historical detail and context to the words of a Civil War battlefield survivor who penned first-hand testimony of the Burnside Expedition, Roanoke Island, and the Second Front against Richmond among his experiences. Private Osborne also follows the soldier's life after the Civil War, up to his death in 1923. A remarkable, gripping testimony, Private Osborne is a welcome and highly recommended contribution to the annals of Civil War history.

Professional Writing in Context: Lessons from Teaching and Consulting in Worlds of Work
Published in Hardcover by Lawrence Erlbaum Assoc (March, 1995)
Average review score:

Great Practical UsesI borrowed this book and found that the various essays about writing in the workplace and teaching writing in the workplace had great practical applications to my daily writing activities at work. While I had an academic reason for my interest in this book, I am now going to buy my own copy!
Helpful sample documents illustrate concepts; great topics such as "Consulting in a Bureaucracy" is helpful in navigating any bureaucracy. "What Adult Work-World Writers...." gives great examples about styles to avoid, etc.
Going into management? You might want this book!

Rain Rain (Rookie Reader)
Published in Paperback by Children's Book Press (September, 1983)
Average review score:

Must Have For Primary TeachersThis is another book in the Rookie Reader series and one of my favorite Rookie Readers. It reminds me alot of the Mark and Janet reading primaries from the 60's and 70's. In this story a boy and girl wonder if it will rain (clouds, lightening, thunder.) They go through the thought process until it does rain and then they play in it. This book is a must have for teachers who teach beginning readers. The word list is easy and it tells a story that makes sense and that children can follow.

Understanding the Teenage and Younger MindFor parents and teachers who want to understand the children evolving before them, this is a book based on sound psychology (Jean Piaget was the 20th Century's premier child psychologist)and inimitable experience. Read it and get a handle on your problems with offspring and students. Enjoy it, too.

Random House Handbook
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Companies (January, 1992)
Average review score:

My teaching "bible"I teach English to sixth, seventh, and eighth graders in a private school. This book is always close at hand to verify answers and to clarify nagging questions (do you capitalize northern when used with California? ) My edition is getting tattered through constant use. The book is well-organized and easy to understand. It covers everything from the correct use of commas to how to cite the internet in research papers. There are examples of use and examples of papers. The examples are interesting to read, and they teach something. What could be better? I have gotten the reputation of expert in my school because of this handbook! Other teachers send me notes asking for help with questions that come up in their classes. Should I tell them my secret?
